À conversa com Gerson Silveira

À conversa com Gerson Silveira

(English version below)

CSNE: Quem é verdadeiramente Gerson Silveira: atleta e o homem fora do desporto?

Eles (Gustavo e Rodrigo) decidiram também abandonar a prova e me deixaram à vontade.

A pandemia e a economia mexeram e bagunçaram nossas vidas.

Vem a lembrança de meu amigo “My Friend” Martin...

Gerson Silveira: Eta, fechei poucos dias atrás.

BOAS FESTAS!

(English version)

At Carlos Sá Nature Events (CSNE) we have many inspiring stories from people that deeply left their mark on us. Gerson is one of them, since the first day we welcomed him at PGTA- Peneda-Gerês Trail Adventure in 2015.

Gerson Silveira is 57 years old, Brazilian and crosses the Atlantic every year to participate in our events. We believe they have also left a mark on him. Let's learn more about this great human being and huge adventurer.

CSNE: Who is truly Gerson Silveira: athlete and the man out of sports?

Gerson Silveira: I am Brazilian, from the state of Minas Gerais, father of two children, Ana Laura and Yuri. I can't imagine myself out of Sports, because I breathe sports every day. At the moment I am retired from the Brazilian Army (where I served for 31 years), I am graduated in Sports here in Brazil, Bachelor in Physical Education. I am a Christian and I am a Spiritist and, as a citizen, I try to live life in a full, disciplined way and with respect for others.

CSNE: What does the practice of sports mean to you and what sports do you practice? In your sporting adventures, what makes you happy to do?

Gerson Silveira: For me, sports are like the air I breathe. I run to live and I live to run. This sentence, I saw it on a runners's jersey and I tattooed it on my back, written in Japanese, to honor the Japanese athletes at Jungle Marathon 2014 who, like Carlos Sá and other athletes, had problems there. And what makes me happy to perform a race, a challenge, is to see on each athlete's face, before and especially after the race, an indescribable smile that no medal in the world pays. It's to register in a race and be respected from the moment of registration until the return back home (as you do so well) and make us equal to the Champion or to the last runner in each race. I have done several ultramarathons in Brazil and in the world and, until today, I have not seen anything like the CSNE races.

CSNE: How did you meet Carlos Sá Nature Events and why did you decide to cross the Atlantic to participate in their events?

Gerson Silveira: I met Carlos Sá in 2014, at Jungle Marathon, a race held in Brazil and in the middle of the Amazon jungle. It's a very difficult and dangerous race, in every way. I remember that, until the 4th Stage, each day was won by Carlos Sá. We didn't have much contact because, at each arrival, the priority was to arrange equipment, food and rest for the next stage. We were 5 Brazilians participating and we always talked after the stages. In Stage 4 I was approached by one of them and he told me about a problem of the organization with the Portuguese who was winning all the stages. And then I was approached for two more, who said that the organizer was going to disqualify Carlos for an unfair reason. They (Gustavo and Rodrigo) decided to abandon the race. For a few hours I kept thinking, because my dream was to run this race. I had problems previously in the Army because they didn't allow me to participate (I didn't go in 2013). But, as I said in the previous answer, when you asked me who Gerson is outside the sport, as a Christian/Spiritist I asked myself "What if it was me?". And the answer was the correct one: I asked for my withdrawal from the race as well and concluded the 4 stages of the 7 proposed. These 2 Brazilians were invited by Carlos to the PGTA 2015 and they invited me too. Then, you already know what you have arranged for you 🙂. I have participated in PGTA since 2015 (only this year I did not come because of the Pandemic) and I have also participated, besides the PGTA, in the FCDTA, Gerês Extreme Marathon and soon I will be around Portugal again.

CSNE: What marked you most when you took part in the first race in Peneda-Gerês? Was it the challenge or the atmosphere between the athletes and the organization?

Gerson Silveira: 🙂🙂 In short: 8 days of race, 8 days of rain, 8 days of slips, laughter and a lot of complicity between the organization and athletes. I will never forget those days in 2015. I think that there, the FAMILY CARLOS SÁ was born. The organization, even with natural adversities, never left an athlete behind. Every day, everyone (athletes, organizers, supporters) in full harmony, went out to run and in each supply point, even with heavy rain, each athlete already exhausted, found the food for the body (a complete table with all the support), but also the food for the spirit, a smile and the word you usually encourage us with: FORÇA (strength). Nature has not punished us. On the contrary, it united us in each stage! There was even an athlete in one of the races (I don't remember the year and I don't remember the name, but I think it was a Spanish one) who was late to the start and all the participants, including his direct opponent in the ranking, decided to wait some time before starting. He did not arrive in time, but later I saw him passing by me like a goat, climbing 5 km of mud and, in the end, he won the race. I remember the athletes Zunzum and the German creating such a good mood in the finish line! And the most important thing, that you do with such mastery: the meals with everybody gathering! In this moment there are not several languages (Spanish, English, Dutch, etc). The language, in these moments, is universal, everyone smiling, telling stories, everyone in the same tune. There is no separate family in PGTA, only union. Here, the challenge and the natural environment become unique and indescribable.

CSNE: You have returned every year, which for us is an honor. But what motivates you to always come back, since in Europe there are many challenging races in incredible places?

Gerson Silveira: I'll sum it up in two sentences:

- Respect for the athlete in every way (I haven't seen this respect anywhere until today).

- CSNE, you are on another level (you are very distinctive).

CSNE: Speaking about incredible places: we think that Brazil could become a world power in terms of Trail Running, since it has many natural parks and incredible nature. What is missing in the Brazilian Trail to achieve it?

Gerson Silveira: I've been running ultramarathons for 15 years and I've participated in several races in Brazil: BR 135 Ultramarathon (217 k) 5 times, Jungle, X Terra (50 K races) several times in several places, Beaches and Trails 80k, 6, 12 and 24 hours ultramarathons on track, among others. I think it is very complicated, as an athlete, to say that Brazil will become a world power. I, particularly, do not think we will reach that level soon in the next 10 years. We have excellent athletes, we have beautiful places and even training, but the results achieved in world competitions give us the answer. Lack of incentive, lack of interest from the public institutions. I know an athlete who has already won 3 Ultramarathon races (Badwater, BR 135 Ultramaratohn and Arrowhead) and paid everything with his credit card. The Army, later, helped in the training and some trips. Another example, Valmir Nunes: I think he was the one who won most ultramarathon races in the world and he shows, in his book, the difficulties he felt. And little has changed so far. I think Europe and other continents are further ahead.

CSNE: Speaking about the future, what are your sporting dreams for the coming years?

Gerson Silveira: 2020 has entered in history as a challenging year for organizers and athletes and for the world in general. The pandemic and the economy have messed up our lives. In 2021, the vaccine will certainly help, but the virus will be active and we must live with it and with humanity. So we will maintain the discipline as athletes and organizers. I intend to return to the PGTA and possibly to FCDTA or similar. The Brazilian currency (Real) is undervalued comparing with Euro and the Dollar. Sponsorship for a 57-year-old athlete (🙂) is called ¨Dad-ship¨(I pay everything). But there is no monetary value to be in Portugal, to be with the Carlos Sá Family and to be in Gerês. God will certainly give me again this opportunity, I believe in it.

CSNE: We were proud when we saw that you tattooed the Peneda-Gerês Trail Adventure logo on your leg. Do you tattoo all the events that mark you?

Gerson Silveira: No. The left leg is only for the great challenges and the most important ones. Each one has its own history. At this very moment and looking at the tattoo, comes the memory of PGTA and FCDTA. Comes the memory of "My Friend" Martin... Also comes the memory of Carlos wanting me to drink wine in the last stage of 2015 🙂, the family of Peh (Indonesia) and his mother with that smile, and the memory of the waterfalls. When I cross the Atlantic, I think about smiles, I think about having fun, I think about meeting people, friends and I feel like a winner each stage and each day. Tattooing PGTA is not to show off the tattoo, but when someone asks what it means, I answer: Respect, Nature and Friendship! Go there and you will be happy! After those 5 in 2015 many others went and others will come to Portugal to meet CSNE/Gerês.

CSNE: How are your books? Will we have a launch in Portugal of your books?

Gerson Silveira: I finished it a few days ago. It was in 2018, in one of the PGTA stages, that an athlete told me "Put these stories in a book." I never imagined it because I'm not good at writing, even though I'm a Pedagogue as well. I think running is easier. But, I took advantage of the pandemic, and it came out! It was sent to print and I think it will be published by February. I have to thank Linda Van de Brink and Koss Gorel, who helped me in the translation and talking a little about Martin Verveer. In advance, the book will be entitled "My Friend's". I will talk about how I started to run but also about a great friend I met in the races, how we greeted each other with a smile and the scream of MY FRIEND! But it will be a book of memories about how and where the sports took me (i will save the rest fo later 🙂).

CSNE: Gerson on behalf of the whole CSNE team, thank you very much for all the affection shown throughout these years! Our multi-stages events will not be the same without so many Brazilian friends! We sincerely hope that you continue with strength and health to run after your dreams. We wish you all a holy and happy Christmas!

Gerson Silveira: I must thank God for the opportunity to meet all of you, without exception. Thank you for this opportunity and especially for your friendship, affection and mutual respect. I pray to God for light, peace, love and, as you say, STRENGTH to all of you! HAPPY FESTIVE SEASON!
